Wu School
呉派・呉門画派 / Ming dynasty, 15th–16th centuries / Style / East Asian Painting
A Ming painting lineage centred on Suzhou, where Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming and others reworked Yuan literati precedents. Calligraphic brushwork, gardens, landscapes and poetry shape its pictures, with considerable differences between bold and meticulous artists. It is narrower than literati painting generally and not defined by a place name alone.
