Terme forgé par Tatsumi Yoshihiro pour se séparer du manga destiné aux enfants. Par un trait fin, des ombres denses et un enchaînement de cases de facture cinématographique, il traite du social et de la violence pour adultes. Il élargit décisivement l'éventail des sujets accessibles à la bande dessinée.
