로코코의 장식 과잉에 대한 반동으로, 폼페이 발굴에 자극받아 고대의 간소함으로 돌아간 운동. 윤곽은 단단하고 색은 억제되며 주제는 시민의 덕을 설파한다. 혁명기의 국가는 이 양식을 자신의 얼굴로 택했다.
