Mouvement sorti en plein air pour saisir la lumière elle-même par une touche rapide. Il abandonne la ligne de contour, pose les ombres en couleurs complémentaires plutôt qu'en noir et peint le même motif autrement selon l'heure du jour. Presque toute l'avant-garde ultérieure se définit par son adhésion ou son refus à ce mouvement.
