Technik, bei der die Garne vor dem Weben abgebunden und gefärbt werden, so berechnet, dass das Muster erst im fertigen Gewebe erscheint. Eine geringe Verschiebung der Fäden lässt die Kontur ausfransen, und dieses Zittern ist der Fingerabdruck des Ikat. Berechnung und Zufall wohnen im selben Arbeitsgang.
