Xieyi

写意画 / historical Chinese painting–present / Technique / East Asian Painting

A Chinese painting method that conveys a subject through expressive strokes, ink values and open space rather than enclosing every detail. Lines related to calligraphy and a few painted masses can suggest flowers or birds. It is more than quick sketching, differs from ink painting as a whole, and can be combined with gongbi.

Dictionary entry

Type
Keep annotations apart from painted strokes and distinguish original writing from editorial explanation.
Composition
Set a dominant ink mass and direction first, retaining open space that supports the subject.
Material
Vary pressure, speed and water in the same brush, testing whether few strokes still convey form.
Caution
Disorder or accidental bleeding alone is insufficient. Read observation and skill behind the abbreviations; do not reduce every example to monochrome improvisation.
