인상주의의 즉흥성에 만족하지 못하고 구조와 상징과 감정을 저마다의 방법으로 되찾은 화가들을 묶는 이름. 하나의 양식이 아니라 점묘, 평평한 색면, 일렁이는 붓질이라는 서로 다른 답이 나란히 선다. 20세기의 추상은 여기에서 갈라져 나왔다.
