Kantha
カンタ刺繍 / living tradition / surviving 19th-century works / Technique / Textile Traditions
A Bengali textile tradition of layering worn cloth and joining it with running stitches and embroidery. Stitch paths create ripples and rhythms around images and geometric forms. Reused material and each maker's composition distinguish these household textiles from quilting as a general technique.

- Composition
- Choose one central relation and connect its surrounding spaces through stitch direction.
- Material
- Layer soft reused cloth and a few fine threads; keep variation rather than forcing a mechanically even repeat.
- Caution
- Not every kantha uses one central layout or one stitch. Distinguish it from sashiko and generic quilts, and document later work using new cloth or cross-stitch individually.
