Un groupe de peintres qui se proclamaient prophètes, parti de la déclaration selon laquelle un tableau est essentiellement une surface plane couverte dans un certain ordre. Ils ont étendu l'intérieur et le quotidien au panneau décoratif, à la lithographie, à l'illustration de livres et au décor de théâtre, dissolvant la frontière entre beaux-arts et arts appliqués.
