    Composes a visual narrative with the whole book — sequence, spreads, margins, text, paper and format, not photographs alone.

  2. Photo Essay 1936–1972 / Layout

    The page form LIFE perfected: photographs edited into narrative arcs. Spread-scale contrasts, opening and closing images and the voice of captions gave photography a story grammar.

  3. Stereograph 1850s–1930s / Style

    The 19th century's biggest picture medium: paired photographs viewed in stereo. Mass-produced cards brought world travel into the parlor — the immersion device before VR.

  4. Carte de Visite 1854–1900s / Style

    Disdéri's patented card-sized portrait: eight poses on one plate democratized portraiture, and celebrity cards and album culture created the shared face — the ancestor of the profile picture.
