Low Poly vs Silicon Dreams
ローポリ / シリコン・ドリームズ
Low Poly comes from Digital Art and Silicon Dreams from Digital Retro. One is technique and the other style. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.
Low Poly
Leaves the few polygons and hard facet changes visible, using simplicity of form as the expression.
Silicon Dreams

A surreal early-3D language in which transformation itself appears as discovery. Mirrored primitives, low polygon counts, infinite floors, morphing, and floating cameras create a space where the computer seems to dream.
| Low Poly | Silicon Dreams | |
|---|---|---|
| Era | 1990s– / revival | late 1980s–late 1990s |
| Family | Digital Art | Digital Retro |
| Kind | Technique | Style |
| Cues | Triangular facets / Angular contours / Flat shading / Few vertices | Spheres, cones, tori, and faces morphing continuously / Mirrors, checker floors, endless horizons, and black space / Low polygons sharing a frame with smooth reflections / A floating camera circling objects without a destination |
| Best used for | Scenes that must run light while still reading by silhouette alone · Backgrounds with many terrain and prop pieces held to one facet size | Recreating the computational wonder of early 3D in film, games, or technology exhibitions · Presenting technology as a continuously changing dream rather than realistic explanation |
| Type | Treat letters as facets too, extruded or laid flat on the surface | Use one simple extruded 3D word and rotate it slowly on the same axis as the object. |
| Composition | Light from an angle where silhouettes read and facets separate depth | Morph one central primitive and use the infinite floor and horizon to reveal camera drift. |
| Material | Flat shading, a fixed vertex budget, color assigned per facet | Retain low polygons, mirrors, checker patterns, and coarse early ray-traced reflections instead of polishing them away. |
| Caution | Cutting vertices as the only goal removes the ones that defined the silhouette, leaving a lump nobody can identify. | Replacing it with contemporary seamless CGI removes the tool-era difference. Preserve period constraints in polygons, reflections, motion, and rendering. |
