Arte Povera vs Conceptual Art
アルテ・ポーヴェラ / コンセプチュアル・アート
Arte Povera comes from Italian Avant-garde and Conceptual Art from Postwar American Art. Both are read here as style. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.
Arte Povera
Takes up earth, branches, cloth, stone, fire and metal, materials that are neither precious nor stable, and uses them to intervene in the commodification of art and the values of industrial society.
Conceptual Art
Puts the idea at the center of the work and presents it through words, definitions, rules, documentation and placement, caring little for finish as an object.

| Cues | Non-precious materials / Change and decay / Nature against industry / Bare assembly | Words and definitions / Instructions and rules / Documentary photographs / Dematerialization |
| Best used for | Installations where the material changing over time is written into the plan. · Spaces that put an industrial product beside a natural one and make the gap the subject. | Exhibitions or research presentations that show procedure and definition instead of a finished object · Participatory projects where published rules let other people carry out the work |
| Type | Let the title be a list of the materials, with no metaphor added. | Plain office grade type presenting the definition exactly as written |
| Composition | Set the work on the floor and refuse the plinth and the spotlight. | Set work beside statement and order everything by the record, not by drama |
| Material | Earth, wax, cloth, metal and living plants, worked as little as possible. | Cheap carriers such as photostats, typescript, index cards and wall writing |
| Caution | Do not reduce this to the mood of aged materials, and keep its critique of value, time, labor and institution. Over conditioning the display turns the work into an unchanging specimen. | Styling the surface to look administrative without a rule or question anyone can test leaves only curt graphic design. Change what counts as the work, including structure, site and the relation to the audience. |
