Compose two styles

Rather than blending two styles into a middle, this assigns them roles: one carries the structure, the other appears as an accent. Where the two fight, it says so before you start.

How to divide the work

Composition
Follow MTV Graphics: Let the shape overflow the frame so it reads as a crop
Type
Set in MTV Graphics's manner (Fix only the outline of the mark and redraw the type inside every time), and let New Wave's lettering (Mix condensed, geometric and vertical setting) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
Material
Ground in MTV Graphics's material (Fill the outline with graffiti, photography and texture); bring in exactly one thing from New Wave (Yellow, red, blue, dots, thin rules).
Colour
Build on #e9e6dd, #67635d, #171615 and admit one accent from #f1dfca, #f03d51, #3156af.

Where they fight

These two are already listed as related, so the join should come easily.

Caution

  • MTV Graphics Using variability as an excuse to change the outline as well, so nothing stays fixed and the mark never accumulates as a sign.
  • New Wave Don't multiply small decorations. Choose one starring deviation.

Image prompt

An original image that takes its structure from MTV Graphics (Style, 1981–) and its accent from New Wave (Style, 1970s–1980s). Structural cues: Fixed shape, variable surface; Graffiti and collage; Seconds-long ID films; Quotations from music culture. Accent cues, used sparingly: Irregular grid; Dots; High chroma; Rotated type. Composition: Let the shape overflow the frame so it reads as a crop. Type and lettering: Fix only the outline of the mark and redraw the type inside every time. Let one material quality come from the second style: Yellow, red, blue, dots, thin rules. Mood: Rebellion, Play, Exhilaration. Color: build on #e9e6dd, #67635d, #171615 with a single accent drawn from #f1dfca, #f03d51, #3156af. Constraints: do not imitate, reference or name any specific artist, studio, brand, character or copyrighted work. Produce an original composition in the general period languages described above.

An identity that refused fixed corporate colors: keep only the shape of the M and repaint its surface endlessly. Manhattan Design's logo system brought 'change itself as consistency' to broadcasting.

  • New Wave 1970s–1980s / Style / Counterculture

Keeps punk's freedom while re-editing color and grid with urban polish.
