Compose styles
Rather than blending styles toward a middle, this gives them roles. The first one carries the structure, the next comes in as the accent, and anything after that shows up in a single detail. Where they fight each other, it says so before you start.
How to divide the work
- Composition
- Follow Ikebana: Three points offset in height and depth, balanced while asymmetric
- Type
- Set in Ikebana's manner (Choose the leading branch line first, let everything answer it), and let Mingei's lettering (Minimal marking, wording that states the use rather than the maker) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
- Material
- Ground in Ikebana's material (The vase mouth decides the fixing, water and cut end left visible); bring in exactly one thing from Mingei (Local materials and standing glazes, the same form made many times).
- Colour
- Build on #e8dbcb, #595641, #231a10 and admit one accent from #dfcc9d, #a66b3b, #3e271d.
Where they fight
- Ikebana and Mingei stand roughly 476 years apart. Keep one of them recognisably period rather than letting both drift into the middle.
Caution
- Ikebana Adding flowers to fill the gaps makes the lines cancel each other, the emptiness goes, and the work becomes just a bouquet.
- Mingei The moment individual authorship is asserted the premise of anonymity collapses, and what remains is expensive craft merely performing plainness.
Image prompt
Produce four original images that take their structure from Ikebana (style, 15th century–) and their accent from Mingei (style, 1926–). ## What to make Make the kind of thing Ikebana exists for: changing the air at a shop or entrance with one branch and a few stems, or building a quiet composition for a shoot where emptiness leads. Choose one subject and hold it across all four. ## Structure comes from Ikebana - Composition by line - Asymmetric balance - Designed emptiness - Season and decay accepted Composition: Three points offset in height and depth, balanced while asymmetric. Type and lettering: Choose the leading branch line first, let everything answer it. ## Accent comes from Mingei, used sparingly - Anonymous craftsmanship - Form following use - The steadiness born of repetition - Local materials and hand habits Let one material quality come from it: Local materials and standing glazes, the same form made many times. ## Colour and feeling Build the ground on #e8dbcb, carry the structure in #595641 and #231a10, and let a single accent come from #a66b3b. These are read off real works, so a direction rather than a fixed palette. Feeling to carry: calm, luxury, intimacy, trust. ## Where they fight - Ikebana and Mingei stand roughly 476 years apart. Keep one of them recognisably period rather than letting both drift into the middle. ## What goes wrong - Ikebana: Adding flowers to fill the gaps makes the lines cancel each other, the emptiness goes, and the work becomes just a bouquet. - Mingei: The moment individual authorship is asserted the premise of anonymity collapses, and what remains is expensive craft merely performing plainness. ## Across the four Keep the roles fixed in all four. Vary the framing, the scale and the arrangement so the set shows what this pairing can do rather than four versions of one picture. ## Constraints - Do not imitate, reference or name any specific artist, studio, brand, character or copyrighted work. - Do not reproduce the composition of an existing work. - Produce original compositions in the general period languages described above.
