Organic Architecture vs Usonian
有機的建築 / ユーソニアン住宅
Both sit in Modern Architecture, so the question is not what they belong to but how they behave. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.
Organic Architecture
Refuses to treat building, furniture, material, terrain and light separately, designing them as one continuum that includes the place and the life lived in it.
Usonian
Frank Lloyd Wright's approach to a simpler American home from the 1930s onward. Low roofs, natural materials and connected living spaces open toward a garden while controlling exposure to the street. It shares the Prairie School's horizontal emphasis, but puts the economy of a smaller dwelling and everyday life at its centre.

| Cues | Integration with terrain / Horizontals / Natural materials / Inside-outside continuity | Low, often single-storey roofs with deep eaves / Timber, brick or stone joined to continuous glazing / Living, dining and kitchen areas connected rather than heavily divided / Restrained street openings and larger garden-facing windows |
| Best used for | Houses on slopes or in woodland where floors step with the ground instead of cutting it. · Projects where built in furniture and building share one module throughout. | Connecting a modest dwelling or guesthouse to its garden · Showing how low rooflines and directional openings shape domestic privacy |
| Type | Repeat one geometry down to signs and furniture, adding no foreign typeface. | Keep signage small and related to material joints; avoid a heraldic front. |
| Composition | Stretch the horizontals and open from a low entry into a tall room. | Connect the living areas beneath one low roof and open long glazed edges toward the garden. |
| Material | Local stone and solid timber joined by plaster and matched metalwork. | Let timber grain, brick and repeated joints provide character beside transparent glass. |
| Caution | Assembling natural materials and curves without reading contours and sun produces a shell that could stand anywhere, missing the principle that unites site, structure, furniture and movement. | Timber and big windows alone do not make a Usonian house. Distinguish the original affordability goal from later growth in scale and cost; structural details require specialist validation. |
