Hedge Maze vs Topiary

迷路園 / トピアリー

Both sit in Garden Styles, so the question is not what they belong to but how they behave. One is layout and the other technique. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.

Hedge Maze

A quarter of a garden where hedge walls are woven into passages and getting lost is itself the designed amusement. The whole figure shows only from above, while anyone standing inside sees walls and forks.

Topiary

Plant sculpture made by clipping evergreens into geometry and animals. Because decades of growth belong to the design, no sculptural technique is slower.

CuesHedges above head height on both sides, cutting the line of sight at the next turn / Paths and walls readable as a single figure once seen from above / A dead end planted at each fork, with the path width never changing / A clearing or small structure set at the centre as the goalClipped geometry / Beasts and emblems / Evergreen density / Decades as working time
Best used forGiving a park or garden a section people stay inside rather than pass through · Building something that reads as a figure from above and as an experience on foot at the same timeGiving a garden an evergreen backbone that survives leaf fall · Answering the axis of a gate or terrace with architectural geometry
TypeChoose a hedge species that holds leaf down to the ground, and keep it above eye level.Only evergreens that rebud densely after cutting, yew and box
CompositionAllow one correct route to the centre, and spread the dead ends evenly around it.One form standing alone, or identical forms at equal intervals
MaterialGive the hedge enough thickness that no sight line passes through, and lay the path in gravel or earth. Two clippings a year, young growth guided by frames
CautionMaking the passages long and narrow for the sake of a handsome plan puts closeness before the pleasure of being lost, and people turn back partway. An ambitious animal abandoned mid training loses its outline, the figure stops reading, and only the missed clipping shows.
