ドイツ表現主義映画 / サイレント映画の字幕カード
German Expressionist Film comes from Cinematic Visual Styles and Silent Film Intertitle from Film Technology. One is style and the other technique. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.
German Expressionist Film
Warped sets, painted shadows and extreme contrast turned a character's inner state directly into landscape, bringing a scenery of the mind into cinema.
Silent Film Intertitle
Dialogue and description were cut into the film as separate cards of type. This is where cinema and typography first met.

|---|---|---|
| Era | 1919–1927 | 1900s–1920s |
| Family | Cinematic Visual Styles | Film Technology |
| Kind | Style | Technique |
| Cues | Warped sets / Painted-on shadows / Oblique compositions / Extreme chiaroscuro | Text cards on black / Ornamental frames / Hand lettering / Alternating rhythm with the action |
| Best used for | Telling a character's dread through warped space rather than dialogue · Horror and thriller teasers that establish fear with light and shadow alone | Short films watched without sound that need dialogue on separate cards · Chapter breaks and advertising borrowing the manner of the silent era |
| Type | Sharpen the lettering too, break verticals to match the buildings | Different faces for speech and narration, trimmed to fit one card |
| Composition | Abandon the horizon, cut the frame obliquely, press ceilings toward the figure | Center the text and keep even space on all four sides |
| Material | Paint the shadows into the set, push tones toward two poles | White out of black, with a faint film weave and gate flicker |
| Caution | Tilting the set alone does not produce interiority, the distortion becomes background decoration, and the frame stops having anything to do with the character. | Cards that explain too much stop the flow every time they appear, and the film turns into something to be read rather than watched. |
