Experimental Type vs Phototypesetting
実験的タイポグラフィ / 写真植字
Experimental Type comes from Avant-garde and Phototypesetting from Type Classification. One is style and the other technique. They are reached for with different intent, which is the fastest way to tell them apart.
Experimental Type
Pushes letters from something read toward something seen and felt.
Phototypesetting
Composition by lens and glass matrix printed letters optically, bringing tight setting, distortion and smooth contours that metal type had never allowed.
| Experimental Type | Phototypesetting | |
|---|---|---|
| Era | 1980s– | 1924–1990s |
| Family | Avant-garde | Type Classification |
| Kind | Style | Technique |
| Cues | Distorted letterforms / Overlaps / Extreme letterspacing / Tension with legibility | Enlarging and reducing by lens / Tight letterspacing / Condensed, extended, oblique / Smooth contours |
| Best used for | Making the title itself the visual · Breaking déjà vu in music and culture | Recreating the typographic air of late Showa magazine advertising through tight setting · Reissue work handling type assets from the phototype era, where pre-digital freedoms and limits matter |
| Type | Variable, stretched, dismantled — support with a plain text face | Track headlines until counters almost touch, leave body text alone |
| Composition | Run type to the edges and partially conceal it | Design in ha units, keep lens distortion to one headline |
| Material | Monochrome plus one color; warps and scanlines | Reproduce photographic blacks and smooth contours through to the halftone |
| Caution | Break everything and the way in disappears. Always keep one readable layer. | Squeezing the body text as well as the headline destroys word spacing, leaving a page that is nostalgic and unreadable at the same time. |
