DIN 1451 vs Pictogram System
DIN 1451 / 案内用ピクトグラム
DIN 1451 comes from Public Design and Pictogram System from Information Design. Both are read here as style. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.
DIN 1451
Engineering lettering laid down as a German industrial standard. Its skeleton can be redrawn with ruler and compass, which unified road signs and factory markings, and the trust that came from having no personality is what designers later came to love.
Pictogram System
Unified symbol systems that name facilities and actions without language. Tokyo 1964 systematized sport and wayfinding symbols; the AIGA/DOT transportation set became the public-domain world standard.
| DIN 1451 | Pictogram System | |
|---|---|---|
| Era | 1931– | 1964– |
| Family | Public Design | Information Design |
| Kind | Style | Style |
| Cues | An engineered skeleton / Unity as standard / The language of road signs / Trust in impersonality | Geometrized human figures / Uniform stroke weight / Consistency as a system / Independence from language |
| Best used for | Building a full wayfinding set for factories, hospitals and outdoor routes · Keeping dimension callouts on drawings consistent between authors | Guiding visitors of many languages through a venue without words · Turning facility or sport categories into marks legible from a distance |
| Type | Condensed or standard width chosen by panel, spacing kept tight | Draw every mark on one grid and stroke weight, human proportions shared |
| Composition | Information stacked flush left, arrows aligned to cap height | Fit all symbols to a square frame with matched margins and optical center |
| Material | White and black knocked out of reflective sheet or enamel | Single color silhouettes, minimum size and viewing distance decided first |
| Caution | Borrowing it for long body copy because the impersonality appeals gives the text a hard even texture that resists being read through. | Drawing each mark as a picture lets stroke and proportion drift, the set stops reading as a system, and meanings swap at a distance. |
