| Cues | High-cut leotard layered over tights or leggings / Fluorescent pink, teal, violet, and yellow / Leg warmers, headbands, and white high-top shoes / High waist, shiny stretch fabric, and V-shaped color blocking | Ease and stretch that preserve movement / Adjustments such as zips, ribs and drawcords / Team color, numbers and stripes used for identity / Functional fabrics including nylon, spandex and neoprene |
| Best used for | Giving fitness, dance, or music the color and velocity of the 1980s · Translating stretch-panel construction and high-waisted geometry into current sportswear | Translating movement performance into clothing meant for the street · Using sport-derived line, numbers and material for both team identity and fashion |
| Type | Use a short heavy italic sans-serif with one fine outline. | Set numbers and short names boldly enough to read at distance, following seams and panel lines. |
| Composition | Concentrate V-shaped blocking high at the waist and open the frame with long limbs and diagonals. | Reserve the range of motion first, then align panel lines and pockets with movement. |
| Material | Layer a shiny leotard over matte tights, controlling fluorescent pairs with black and white. | Assign stretch, weight, waterproofing and ventilation to the exact places that need each property. |
| Caution | Fluorescence and leg warmers alone become costume. Test stretch, opacity, heat, and range of motion during real movement. | Stripes and numbers alone empty out the sporting relation. Be able to name the movement helped and the material doing the work. |
