Compose styles

Rather than blending styles toward a middle, this gives them roles. The first one carries the structure, the next comes in as the accent, and anything after that shows up in a single detail. Where they fight each other, it says so before you start.

How to divide the work

Composition
Follow 1980s Workout Style: Concentrate V-shaped blocking high at the waist and open the frame with long limbs and diagonals
Type
Set in 1980s Workout Style's manner (Use a short heavy italic sans-serif with one fine outline), and let Sportswear as Fashion's lettering (Set numbers and short names boldly enough to read at distance, following seams and panel lines) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
Material
Ground in 1980s Workout Style's material (Layer a shiny leotard over matte tights, controlling fluorescent pairs with black and white); bring in exactly one thing from Sportswear as Fashion (Assign stretch, weight, waterproofing and ventilation to the exact places that need each property).
Colour
Build on #F04E9B, #2FD0C4, #5B2E91 and admit one accent from #163B65, #E8433E, #F2F1EA.

Where they fight

  • 1980s Workout Style and Sportswear as Fashion both belong to Fashion History, so the difference is small. Push the roles further apart than feels comfortable.
  • 1980s Workout Style and Sportswear as Fashion stand roughly 120 years apart. Keep one of them recognisably period rather than letting both drift into the middle.

Caution

  • 1980s Workout Style Fluorescence and leg warmers alone become costume. Test stretch, opacity, heat, and range of motion during real movement.
  • Sportswear as Fashion Stripes and numbers alone empty out the sporting relation. Be able to name the movement helped and the material doing the work.
