Compose two styles

Rather than blending two styles into a middle, this assigns them roles: one carries the structure, the other appears as an accent. Where the two fight, it says so before you start.

How to divide the work

Composition
Follow Web 1.0: Left-aligned, borders, table-like division
Type
Set in Web 1.0's manner (System sans and monospace), and let Yesterweb's lettering (A quirky display face for headings and a plain sans for body text; the manifesto stays as text no matter how long, never as an image.) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
Material
Ground in Web 1.0's material (White background, blue links, dithered images); bring in exactly one thing from Yesterweb (Purple and pink laid over black, a tiled image fixed behind everything, and buttons and stamps pasted in as raw GIFs with no compression pass and no shared dimensions.).
Colour
Build on #c9c9c9, #0000ee, #111111 and admit one accent from #000000, #56289B, #C26AB7.

Where they fight

  • Both belong to Digital Retro, so the difference is small. Push the roles further apart than feels comfortable.

Caution

  • Web 1.0 Don't regress actual accessibility. Separate the look from interaction quality.
  • Yesterweb Collect the nineties signifiers but drop the argument and the reason for leaving the corporate web goes with it, leaving the nostalgic wallpaper the movement's own summary names as the trap.

Image prompt

An original image that takes its structure from Web 1.0 (Style, 1990s) and its accent from Yesterweb (Aesthetic, 2021–2023). Structural cues: Blue links; Low-res GIFs; System fonts; Plain buttons. Accent cues, used sparingly: Rows of 88 by 31 pixel buttons, put there to be copied by hand onto somebody else's page; A tiled background image that stays fixed while the page scrolls past it; Text heavy GIF stamps carrying the argument itself, such as frames are fine and you should make your own website; Previous, next, and random webring buttons closing out the foot of the page. Composition: Left-aligned, borders, table-like division. Type and lettering: System sans and monospace. Let one material quality come from the second style: Purple and pink laid over black, a tiled image fixed behind everything, and buttons and stamps pasted in as raw GIFs with no compression pass and no shared dimensions.. Mood: Nostalgia, Play, Rebellion, Intimacy. Color: build on #c9c9c9, #0000ee, #111111 with a single accent drawn from #000000, #56289B, #C26AB7. Constraints: do not imitate, reference or name any specific artist, studio, brand, character or copyrighted work. Produce an original composition in the general period languages described above.

The look of a movement that began in February 2021 as a Discord room and grew into a webring and a zine. It calls for leaving what it names the core web, the platforms run for profit, in favor of a peripheral web of hand written personal sites, and it dresses its pages in 88 by 31 buttons and stamps arguing that frames are still a good tool.
