Compose styles

Rather than blending styles toward a middle, this gives them roles. The first one carries the structure, the next comes in as the accent, and anything after that shows up in a single detail. Where they fight each other, it says so before you start.

How to divide the work

Composition
Follow Rotoscope: Do not keep the live framing, redraw the background to clean it up
Type
Set in Rotoscope's manner (Redraw the lettering every frame so it wavers with the artwork), and let Stop Motion's lettering (Build the lettering as a physical object and light it with the set) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
Material
Ground in Rotoscope's material (Vary the line weight and let the contour keep wavering); bring in exactly one thing from Stop Motion (Fabric, clay and paper chosen to hold up under close inspection).
Colour
Build on #c3c4be, #842017, #040707 and admit one accent from #dad8dd, #aa583d, #37451b.

Where they fight

  • Rotoscope and Stop Motion both belong to Animation Techniques, so the difference is small. Push the roles further apart than feels comfortable.
  • Rotoscope and Stop Motion are techniques rather than looks. Decide which one runs last in the process, because that is the one that will show.

Caution

  • Rotoscope Tracing without deciding what a drawing should keep and what it should drop, so the movement is accurate and the image has nothing to look at.
  • Stop Motion Smoothing away every tremor and fingerprint until the result is something computer graphics would have produced faster and cheaper.

Image prompt

Produce four original images that take their structure from Rotoscope (technique, 1915–) and their accent from Stop Motion (technique, 1898–). ## What to make Make the kind of thing Rotoscope exists for: showing the weight of human gesture or a crowd while staying in drawing, or converting live footage into drawing for reasons of texture or rights. Choose one subject and hold it across all four. ## Structure comes from Rotoscope - Movement from live action - Wavering contours - Bodies with weight - Between film and drawing Composition: Do not keep the live framing, redraw the background to clean it up. Type and lettering: Redraw the lettering every frame so it wavers with the artwork. ## Accent comes from Stop Motion, used sparingly - Frame-by-frame shooting - Real models and textures - A faint tremor - Miniature lighting Let one material quality come from it: Fabric, clay and paper chosen to hold up under close inspection. ## Colour and feeling Build the ground on #c3c4be, carry the structure in #842017 and #040707, and let a single accent come from #aa583d. These are read off real works, so a direction rather than a fixed palette. Feeling to carry: intimacy, technique, nostalgia, play. ## Where they fight - Rotoscope and Stop Motion both belong to Animation Techniques, so the difference is small. Push the roles further apart than feels comfortable. - Rotoscope and Stop Motion are techniques rather than looks. Decide which one runs last in the process, because that is the one that will show. ## What goes wrong - Rotoscope: Tracing without deciding what a drawing should keep and what it should drop, so the movement is accurate and the image has nothing to look at. - Stop Motion: Smoothing away every tremor and fingerprint until the result is something computer graphics would have produced faster and cheaper. ## Across the four Keep the roles fixed in all four. Vary the framing, the scale and the arrangement so the set shows what this pairing can do rather than four versions of one picture. ## Constraints - Do not imitate, reference or name any specific artist, studio, brand, character or copyrighted work. - Do not reproduce the composition of an existing work. - Produce original compositions in the general period languages described above.

  • Rotoscope 1915– / Technique / Animation Techniques

Tracing live-action footage frame by frame. Patented by the Fleischers, it mixes the gravity of live action with the freedom of drawing into a distinctive wavering line.

  • Stop Motion 1898– / Technique / Animation Techniques

Moving puppets and models one frame at a time to give matter life. The faint tremor of handwork and the presence of real materials remain a charm CG cannot replace.
