Compose styles
Rather than blending styles toward a middle, this gives them roles. The first one carries the structure, the next comes in as the accent, and anything after that shows up in a single detail. Where they fight each other, it says so before you start.
How to divide the work
- Composition
- Follow One UI: Split the screen at thumb reach. Keep only the title and open space above, and move everything that is pressed, switched or confirmed below it. Never let the side margins fall under 24dp
- Type
- Set in One UI's manner (Let the title fill the height of the upper area and open a wide gap between it and body text. The collapsed title may be a shorter, different string from the expanded one), and let Sailfish Silica's lettering (Use light, large sans text and write only current state and next action) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
- Material
- Ground in One UI's material (Round corners generously, roughly 12dp to 26dp. Choose one of two grounds, #fafafa or #000000, restrict the accent to a single blue, and bring no other hue onto the screen); bring in exactly one thing from Sailfish Silica (Start from a dark wallpaper, use one extracted highlight color and vary white transparency for primary and secondary text).
- Colour
- Build on #0381FE, #FAFAFA, #000000 and admit one accent from #152A33, #47D7C8, #F7F9FA.
Where they fight
- One UI and Sailfish Silica both belong to Platform Screen Languages, so the difference is small. Push the roles further apart than feels comfortable.
Caution
- One UI Putting a pressable control into the viewing area destroys the reason for splitting the screen at all, and what is left is just a layout with a lot of empty space at the top.
- Sailfish Silica Dark wallpaper and thin type alone are not Silica. Edge gestures, Pulley Menu and Ambience color must form one operation model.
Image prompt
Produce four original images that take their structure from One UI (style, 2018–) and their accent from Sailfish Silica (style, 2013–). ## What to make Make the kind of thing One UI exists for: pulling every control to the lower half of a large phone screen so one thumb can reach all of them, or rebuilding a list screen as a set of rounded containers instead of rows divided by rules. Choose one subject and hold it across all four. ## Structure comes from One UI - The upper part of the screen holds nothing but a title and open space, with no touchable control in it - Text and images are collected into card shaped containers with strongly rounded corners - The title bar has only two states, expanded and collapsed, and never rests anywhere in between - In the dark theme the ground goes to true black and only the blue accent sits on top of it Composition: Split the screen at thumb reach. Keep only the title and open space above, and move everything that is pressed, switched or confirmed below it. Never let the side margins fall under 24dp. Type and lettering: Let the title fill the height of the upper area and open a wide gap between it and body text. The collapsed title may be a shorter, different string from the expanded one. ## Accent comes from Sailfish Silica, used sparingly - Text and focus tinted from the wallpaper - Translucent controls floating over dark imagery - Layers peeled by swipes from screen edges - Pulley Menu revealed by pulling, with generous spacing Let one material quality come from it: Start from a dark wallpaper, use one extracted highlight color and vary white transparency for primary and secondary text. ## Colour and feeling Build the ground on #FAFAFA, carry the structure in #0381FE and #000000, and let a single accent come from #47D7C8. These are read off real works, so a direction rather than a fixed palette. Feeling to carry: calm, intimacy, trust, futurity. ## Where they fight - One UI and Sailfish Silica both belong to Platform Screen Languages, so the difference is small. Push the roles further apart than feels comfortable. ## What goes wrong - One UI: Putting a pressable control into the viewing area destroys the reason for splitting the screen at all, and what is left is just a layout with a lot of empty space at the top. - Sailfish Silica: Dark wallpaper and thin type alone are not Silica. Edge gestures, Pulley Menu and Ambience color must form one operation model. ## Across the four Keep the roles fixed in all four. Vary the framing, the scale and the arrangement so the set shows what this pairing can do rather than four versions of one picture. ## Constraints - Do not imitate, reference or name any specific artist, studio, brand, character or copyrighted work. - Do not reproduce the composition of an existing work. - Produce original compositions in the general period languages described above.

- One UI 2018– / Style / Platform Screen Languages
Samsung's design language for Galaxy devices. It cuts the screen at the height a thumb reaches most easily and calls the part above that the viewing area and the part below the interaction area, so titles sit high while buttons, tabs and dialogs are gathered low. Content is collected into containers with heavily rounded corners, the ground is either white or true black, and a single blue carries every accent.
- Sailfish Silica 2013– / Style / Platform Screen Languages
Sailfish OS's QML language centers the mobile experience on edge gestures and Ambience: wallpaper color runs through translucent type and highlights, while the screen edge itself becomes back, close and switch.
