Compose styles

Rather than blending styles toward a middle, this gives them roles. The first one carries the structure, the next comes in as the accent, and anything after that shows up in a single detail. Where they fight each other, it says so before you start.

How to divide the work

Composition
Follow Engraving / Burin Engraving: Run line bundles along the form and vary crossed-line density to separate shadows
Type
Set in Engraving / Burin Engraving's manner (Keep lettering in the work separate from added labels; place medium, artist and date outside the image), and let Etching's lettering (Draw the lettering with the same needle so its weight matches the image) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
Material
Ground in Engraving / Burin Engraving's material (Check the collection medium record and the paper and ink; do not infer materials from screen colour alone); bring in exactly one thing from Etching (Vary line depth by bite time, stopping out in stages as the acid works).
Colour
Build on #E1D5BF, #403B35, #8D8071 and admit one accent from #e8dfcd, #7b6855, #282420.

Where they fight

  • Engraving / Burin Engraving and Etching both belong to Intaglio Printing, so the difference is small. Push the roles further apart than feels comfortable.
  • Engraving / Burin Engraving and Etching are techniques rather than looks. Decide which one runs last in the process, because that is the one that will show.
  • Engraving / Burin Engraving and Etching stand roughly 100 years apart. Keep one of them recognisably period rather than letting both drift into the middle.

Caution

  • Engraving / Burin Engraving Do not label every old printed illustration an engraving. Check the matrix, cutting method and whether it is a mixed print.
  • Etching A uniform pen line filter is no substitute, since bite time, overlapping lines, ink left in the wiping and press pressure make the difference, and layering without timing fills detail with black.

Image prompt

Produce four original images that take their structure from Engraving / Burin Engraving (technique, 15th century–present) and their accent from Etching (technique, 16th century–). ## What to make Make the kind of thing Engraving / Burin Engraving exists for: exhibitions and teaching that compare Engraving / Burin Engraving with neighbouring print techniques, or publications studying lines, tones and paper through documented works. Choose one subject and hold it across all four. ## Structure comes from Engraving / Burin Engraving - Clearly controlled incised lines - Parallel and crossed hatching - Dense line fields beside paper white - Bundles of lines follow the form Composition: Run line bundles along the form and vary crossed-line density to separate shadows. Type and lettering: Keep lettering in the work separate from added labels; place medium, artist and date outside the image. ## Accent comes from Etching, used sparingly - Thin flowing lines - Depth by biting - Cross-hatching - Plate marks Let one material quality come from it: Vary line depth by bite time, stopping out in stages as the acid works. ## Colour and feeling Build the ground on #E1D5BF, carry the structure in #8D8071 and #403B35, and let a single accent come from #7b6855. These are read off real works, so a direction rather than a fixed palette. Feeling to carry: technique, trust, luxury, calm. ## Where they fight - Engraving / Burin Engraving and Etching both belong to Intaglio Printing, so the difference is small. Push the roles further apart than feels comfortable. - Engraving / Burin Engraving and Etching are techniques rather than looks. Decide which one runs last in the process, because that is the one that will show. - Engraving / Burin Engraving and Etching stand roughly 100 years apart. Keep one of them recognisably period rather than letting both drift into the middle. ## What goes wrong - Engraving / Burin Engraving: Do not label every old printed illustration an engraving. Check the matrix, cutting method and whether it is a mixed print. - Etching: A uniform pen line filter is no substitute, since bite time, overlapping lines, ink left in the wiping and press pressure make the difference, and layering without timing fills detail with black. ## Across the four Keep the roles fixed in all four. Vary the framing, the scale and the arrangement so the set shows what this pairing can do rather than four versions of one picture. ## Constraints - Do not imitate, reference or name any specific artist, studio, brand, character or copyrighted work. - Do not reproduce the composition of an existing work. - Produce original compositions in the general period languages described above.

  • Engraving / Burin Engraving 15th century–present / Technique / Intaglio Printing

An intaglio print made by cutting a metal plate directly with a burin or similar tool. Controlled changes in line width and dense parallel or crossed lines describe form and tone. It differs from acid etching, relief wood engraving and inscriptions cut into objects.

  • Etching 16th century– / Technique / Intaglio Printing

A needle draws through the acid-resistant ground and the acid bites the metal it exposes, cutting lines into the plate that are thin, fluid and close to handwriting.
