Compose styles

Rather than blending styles toward a middle, this gives them roles. The first one carries the structure, the next comes in as the accent, and anything after that shows up in a single detail. Where they fight each other, it says so before you start.

How to divide the work

Composition
Follow Cassette Futurism: Panels divided by function, surfaces filled with rows of buttons
Type
Set in Cassette Futurism's manner (Monospaced dot type beside small engraved-looking labels), and let Retrofuturism's lettering (Combine assertive period advertising with technical annotations) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
Material
Ground in Cassette Futurism's material (Yellowed white plastic, thermal paper, glow carrying scan lines); bring in exactly one thing from Retrofuturism (Keep chrome, amber displays, faded paper and painted metal visibly of their period).
Colour
Build on #d2c7bc, #ca2432, #171412 and admit one accent from #E7D8B5, #E65A3A, #234A66.

Where they fight

These are already listed as related entries, so the join should come easily.

Caution

  • Cassette Futurism Arranging nostalgic parts without working out the operation produces a panel that looks right but never tells you what to press first.
  • Retrofuturism Neon plus old machines is not enough. Decide when, by whom and for whom this future was imagined.

Image prompt

Produce four original images that take their structure from Cassette Futurism (aesthetic, 1977–1990s / retro revival) and their accent from Retrofuturism (aesthetic, 1970s–). ## What to make Make the kind of thing Cassette Futurism exists for: control panels and readouts for near-future films and games, or interfaces for music gear or instruments sold on physical feel. Choose one subject and hold it across all four. ## Structure comes from Cassette Futurism - CRTs and physical buttons - Squared-off white plastic - Dot-matrix displays - Matte pragmatism Composition: Panels divided by function, surfaces filled with rows of buttons. Type and lettering: Monospaced dot type beside small engraved-looking labels. ## Accent comes from Retrofuturism, used sparingly - Streamlined vehicles and monumental cities - Analog gauges, chrome and vacuum tubes - Space-age advertising type and diagrams - Faded print beside luminous future imagery Let one material quality come from it: Keep chrome, amber displays, faded paper and painted metal visibly of their period. ## Colour and feeling Build the ground on #d2c7bc, carry the structure in #ca2432 and #171412, and let a single accent come from #E65A3A. These are read off real works, so a direction rather than a fixed palette. Feeling to carry: nostalgia, technique, futurity, play. ## What goes wrong - Cassette Futurism: Arranging nostalgic parts without working out the operation produces a panel that looks right but never tells you what to press first. - Retrofuturism: Neon plus old machines is not enough. Decide when, by whom and for whom this future was imagined. ## Across the four Keep the roles fixed in all four. Vary the framing, the scale and the arrangement so the set shows what this pairing can do rather than four versions of one picture. ## Constraints - Do not imitate, reference or name any specific artist, studio, brand, character or copyrighted work. - Do not reproduce the composition of an existing work. - Produce original compositions in the general period languages described above.

The future as the 1980s pictured it, built from CRTs, physical buttons, thermal paper and squared-off white plastic. Its matte pragmatism is now being reappraised as the counterproposal to sleek science fiction.

  • Retrofuturism 1970s– / Aesthetic / Digital Culture

Retrofuturism revisits futures imagined in the past through their vehicles, materials, advertising and cosmic visions, preserving both their hope and their blind spots.
