Compose two styles

Rather than blending two styles into a middle, this assigns them roles: one carries the structure, the other appears as an accent. Where the two fight, it says so before you start.

How to divide the work

Composition
Follow Art Nouveau: Vertical formats, frame compositions, a central figure
Type
Set in Art Nouveau's manner (Curvilinear serifs or hand lettering), and let Pre-Raphaelite's lettering (Decorative faces drawn from medieval manuscripts, never for body text.) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
Material
Ground in Art Nouveau's material (Dusty greens and gold, line work, paper texture); bring in exactly one thing from Pre-Raphaelite (Lay transparent color over a white ground to raise the saturation.).
Colour
Build on #e9ddbe, #829270, #6f3f35 and admit one accent from #e9e6dd, #67635d, #171615.

Where they fight

These two are already listed as related, so the join should come easily.

Caution

  • Art Nouveau Stock vine ornaments stay superficial. Carry the line through the whole composition.
  • Pre-Raphaelite Collecting medievalist signs only yields an antique. The density of description has to engage with the subject.

Image prompt

An original image that takes its structure from Art Nouveau (Style, 1890s–1910s) and its accent from Pre-Raphaelite (Style, 1848–1900s). Structural cues: Botanical curves; Ornamental frames; Female figures; Muted natural colors. Accent cues, used sparingly: Brilliant color raised from a white ground; Equal density of description in every corner; Medieval and literary subjects; Botanical accuracy in natural things. Composition: Vertical formats, frame compositions, a central figure. Type and lettering: Curvilinear serifs or hand lettering. Let one material quality come from the second style: Lay transparent color over a white ground to raise the saturation.. Mood: Luxury, Intimacy, Nostalgia. Color: build on #e9ddbe, #829270, #6f3f35 with a single accent drawn from #e9e6dd, #67635d, #171615. Constraints: do not imitate, reference or name any specific artist, studio, brand, character or copyrighted work. Produce an original composition in the general period languages described above.

Joins letters, figures and ornament into one flowing, plant-like line.

An English brotherhood that discarded the formulas established after Raphael and tried to return to the clarity of the early Renaissance. Transparent paint over a white ground made the color uncannily sharp, and because every detail is worked to the same degree, the eye has nowhere to rest.
