Compose two styles

Rather than blending two styles into a middle, this assigns them roles: one carries the structure, the other appears as an accent. Where the two fight, it says so before you start.

How to divide the work

Composition
Follow Amiga Workbench: One full width title bar runs across the top of the screen and windows fill the space below. Windows may overlap freely, but screens never do, since they slide vertically as whole layers.
Type
Set in Amiga Workbench's manner (Set a monospaced bitmap face at its native size with no scaling and no smoothing. Fix the cap height around eight pixels and keep the leading tight.), and let Demoscene's lettering (Monospaced bitmap letters scrolling greetings along the bottom of the screen) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
Material
Ground in Amiga Workbench's material (Fix the four color set before anything else. Build depth from a one pixel light line and a one pixel dark line rather than a gradient, keep the light source at the top left, and swap the two lines for the pressed state.); bring in exactly one thing from Demoscene (Patterns generated from formulas and procedural textures carrying no asset files).
Colour
Build on #0055AA, #FF8800, #FFFFFF and admit one accent from #e9e6dd, #67635d, #171615.

Caution

  • Amiga Workbench Adding colors past the four breaks the very mechanism that carried press and disabled states, because those were read as contrast in brightness, and the controls become indistinguishable on a monochrome or grayscale display.
  • Demoscene Effects lined up without syncing to the music give the virtuosity nowhere to land and the screen turns monotonous.
