Compose styles
Rather than blending styles toward a middle, this gives them roles. The first one carries the structure, the next comes in as the accent, and anything after that shows up in a single detail. Where they fight each other, it says so before you start.
How to divide the work
- Composition
- Follow American Regionalism: A single figure or task at mid-height, the ground curving behind it in bands, the horizon high and the sky small
- Type
- Set in American Regionalism's manner (A sturdy slab or heavy-stemmed grotesque, set in short declarative lines like a mural caption), and let Indigenismo's lettering (A firm, broad-stemmed face whose weight matches the mass of the figure, with pre-Columbian geometry used sparingly as rule and border) appear only where you want the eye to catch.
- Material
- Ground in American Regionalism's material (Earth pigments of ochre, umber and oxide green, printed on stock warm enough to keep the whites off white); bring in exactly one thing from Indigenismo (Ochre, oxide red and the hard blue of high altitude, on matte surfaces that hold earth tones without gloss).
- Colour
- Build on #dad4c5, #835433, #201a21 and admit one accent from #e0c5ac, #c9644c, #3b1d1c.
Where they fight
These are already listed as related entries, so the join should come easily.
Caution
- American Regionalism Borrowing the rolling fields as nostalgic wallpaper strips away the labour that is the actual subject and leaves folksy pastiche, and figures simplified too far erase the specific land into generic countryside.
- Indigenismo Painting people as an ideal seen from outside takes their self representation away, and applying pre-Columbian pattern as decoration to an otherwise European image is the very appropriation the movement formed against.
Image prompt
Produce four original images that take their structure from American Regionalism (style, 1930–1943) and their accent from Indigenismo (style, 1920s–1950s). ## What to make Make the kind of thing American Regionalism exists for: civic and cooperative identity for agriculture, regional food and public utilities, where a place has to look as though it belongs to the people who work it, or large-format mural and packaging illustration that must tell its story from across a room. Choose one subject and hold it across all four. ## Structure comes from American Regionalism - Compositions of rolling hills and farmland - Stylised, plain-spoken figures - Scenes with a clearly legible narrative - Colour keyed to the earth Composition: A single figure or task at mid-height, the ground curving behind it in bands, the horizon high and the sky small. Type and lettering: A sturdy slab or heavy-stemmed grotesque, set in short declarative lines like a mural caption. ## Accent comes from Indigenismo, used sparingly - Depiction of indigenous bodies and dress - The colour range of Andean earth and sky - Monumental mass in the figure - Quotation of pre-Columbian ornament Let one material quality come from it: Ochre, oxide red and the hard blue of high altitude, on matte surfaces that hold earth tones without gloss. ## Colour and feeling Build the ground on #dad4c5, carry the structure in #835433 and #201a21, and let a single accent come from #c9644c. These are read off real works, so a direction rather than a fixed palette. Feeling to carry: nostalgia, trust, intimacy, rebellion. ## What goes wrong - American Regionalism: Borrowing the rolling fields as nostalgic wallpaper strips away the labour that is the actual subject and leaves folksy pastiche, and figures simplified too far erase the specific land into generic countryside. - Indigenismo: Painting people as an ideal seen from outside takes their self representation away, and applying pre-Columbian pattern as decoration to an otherwise European image is the very appropriation the movement formed against. ## Across the four Keep the roles fixed in all four. Vary the framing, the scale and the arrangement so the set shows what this pairing can do rather than four versions of one picture. ## Constraints - Do not imitate, reference or name any specific artist, studio, brand, character or copyrighted work. - Do not reproduce the composition of an existing work. - Produce original compositions in the general period languages described above.

- American Regionalism 1930–1943 / Style / American Modern Art
A movement in Depression-era America that refused the European avant-garde and painted the farming and labour of the Midwest in realist terms. Rolling hills, stylised figures and legible narrative became national imagery by way of murals, magazines and postage stamps. The classic case of a region turned into a style.
- Indigenismo 1920s–1950s / Style / Avant-garde
A movement, centred on the Andean countries, that made the bodies, dress and land of indigenous people the subject of the nation. It took local frame and local colour as its standard in place of a European ideal, and spread through painting, printmaking, photography and architectural ornament. It shifted the question of what beauty is measured against.
