Social Realism vs Socialist Realism

ソーシャル・リアリズム / 社会主義リアリズム

Both sit in Printmaking and Social Movements, so the question is not what they belong to but how they behave. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.

Social Realism

Social Realism used legible figures, public art, print and photography to expose contemporary labor, poverty, racism, migration and urban conditions. It is distinct from state-prescribed Socialist Realism.

Socialist Realism

A realism codified as the state's official style in 1934, depicting workers and leaders in idealised form. It rejected avant-garde experiment in favour of imagery legible to everyone, repeating the regime's narrative through low viewpoints, forward-striding crowds and the light of a bright future. Important as a rare case in which a state decreed a style.

CuesWorkers, unemployed people, migrants and urban crowds centered / Factories, housing and streets making conditions legible / Direct figuration spanning prints, murals and photographs / Individual hardship connected to institutions or collective problemsHeroicised figures of workers / Monumental compositions seen from below / Healthy skin and bright light / Crowds striding forward
Best used forCommunicating labor and inequality publicly through people and environments rather than statistics alone · Translating social critique into legible posters, murals, editorial work or exhibitionsCritical or satirical work that quotes the monumentality of state propaganda knowingly · Historical exhibitions and publications that examine twentieth-century propaganda imagery
TypeUse short direct headings plus names, places and dates; do not overwrite a subject's voice with decorative slogans.Keep the slogan to one short line in heavy monumental capitals across the base
CompositionPut human action forward and connect it to factories, streets, housing and crowds as readable causes and relations.Drop the viewpoint below waist height and mass striding figures against the sky like monuments
MaterialUse the forceful contrast of woodcut, lithograph, mural or grain-bearing photography suited to reproduction and public display.Naturalistic oil, bright light on skin and metal, shadows kept light, red banners against clear sky
CautionDo not consume labor or poverty as dramatic material. Separate it from the state heroics of Socialist Realism and state who represents whose conditions for what purpose.Avoid deploying its heroic monumentality unframed—without critical distance the imagery simply reads as propaganda again.
