Paper Marbling vs Suminagashi
マーブリング / 墨流し
Both sit in Decorated Paper, so the question is not what they belong to but how they behave. Both are read here as technique. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.
Paper Marbling
Color floated on liquid is lifted onto paper once and only once, producing an order that cannot be repeated.
Suminagashi
A technique in which concentric rings of ink dropped on the surface of water are disturbed by breath or brush and then lifted onto paper. The flow that appears on each sheet cannot be repeated, and from Heian period decorated papers to contemporary bookbinding it has continued as a method for inviting chance on purpose.

| Era | historical–present | 12th century– |
| Family | Decorated Paper | Decorated Paper |
| Kind | Technique | Technique |
| Cues | Fluid veins / Comb patterns / Multicolor swirls / Every sheet different | Streamlines of disturbed concentric rings / Layers made by the density of the ink / A pattern different on every sheet / Edges that keep the tension of the water surface |
| Best used for | A one-of-one feel for bindings, packaging and grounds · Organic counterpoint to strict typesetting | Making a ground of which no two sheets are the same · Making a surface that handles quiet and chance at once |
| Type | A composed serif or small sans that doesn't fight the pattern | Place type clear of the flow and do not let it compete with the ground. |
| Composition | Full-bleed pattern needs one clear text plane; partial use should show the cut edge | Fix the direction of the streamlines and run them diagonally to the edges of the sheet. |
| Material | Two to four flowing colors, the paper's absorbency, slight unevenness | Drop ink and surfactant alternately onto the water and disturb them with your breath. |
| Caution | A digital swirl is no substitute. Understand the liquid's flow, the comb, the chance of transfer. | Trying to control it completely produces a dead pattern. Decide in advance how much room chance is given. |
