Light and Space vs Op Art

ライト・アンド・スペース / オプ・アート

Both sit in Geometric Abstraction, so the question is not what they belong to but how they behave. Both are read here as style. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.

Light and Space

The Southern California movement that takes light itself, spatial perception and the limits of vision as material. Turrell's openings to the sky and Irwin's scrims make the act of seeing the artwork.

Op Art

Raises perceptual vibration and depth inside a still image through repeated line, form and value.

CuesObjects erased / Rooms filled with light / Thresholds of perception / Apertures to the skyHigh contrast / Repeated lines / Optical illusion / Geometric distortion
Best used forDesigning a room itself as the experience, with no object placed in it · Making light that changes over time the central attraction of a buildingKey visuals that stop the eye hard · Implying sound and motion in a still
TypeFinish all wording outside the room and leave no text or marker insideKeep a neutral sans away from the illusion zone
CompositionErase corners and edges so no break between surfaces can be foundDeform one repetition rule gradually
MaterialScrims, resin and built up coatings, with the source itself hiddenBlack and white plus exactly one color
CautionTurning the light up to make it noticeable destroys an effect that depends on perceptual thresholds, leaving nothing but a glowing interior.Never let the vibration reach the reading zone. Lower area and contrast on long-viewed screens.
