Jianzhi (Chinese Paper Cutting) vs Papel Picado

剪紙 / パペル・ピカド

Both are openwork ornaments cut from paper, hung at a celebration and letting the light pass through.

How to tell them apart. Jianzhi is a single red sheet pasted to a window with its lines never severed. Papel picado is cut through stacked tissue and strung into flags.

Jianzhi (Chinese Paper Cutting)

Chinese paper cutting works red paper with scissors and knife. As window flowers it dresses the windows at the New Year, weaving auspicious patterns and stories out of connected line alone, a positive-negative figure design still transmitted as intangible heritage.

Papel Picado

For Mexican festivals dozens of sheets of tissue are chiseled through at once. The delicate openings let light and wind pass, and they carry celebration and remembrance of the dead with the same lightness.

CautionDrawing the motif too fine leaves the paper unconnected so it falls apart, breaking the premise of designing positive and negative at once.Cutting away too much and leaving no bridges tears the sheet on the first windy day, and the decoration falls before the festival ends.
