Film Noir vs German Expressionist Film
フィルム・ノワール / ドイツ表現主義映画
Both sit in Cinematic Visual Styles, so the question is not what they belong to but how they behave. Both are read here as style. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.
Film Noir
Cuts distrust, isolation and fatalism into the frame with low-key lighting, deep shadow, oblique composition, the city at night, reflections.
German Expressionist Film
Warped sets, painted shadows and extreme contrast turned a character's inner state directly into landscape, bringing a scenery of the mind into cinema.

| Cues | Low-key lighting / Hard chiaroscuro / Rain and night streets / Slanting shadows | Warped sets / Painted-on shadows / Oblique compositions / Extreme chiaroscuro |
| Best used for | Crime and distrust on screen, where unease comes from light instead of dialogue. · Lighting design for short films and music videos set in the city at night. | Telling a character's dread through warped space rather than dialogue · Horror and thriller teasers that establish fear with light and shadow alone |
| Type | Place titles and subtitles over shadow so the highlights stay unbroken. | Sharpen the lettering too, break verticals to match the buildings |
| Composition | Push the figure to one edge and fill the rest with shadow and reflection. | Abandon the horizon, cut the frame obliquely, press ceilings toward the figure |
| Material | One hard key in low key, wet streets, blinds and grilles cutting the light. | Paint the shadows into the set, push tones toward two poles |
| Caution | When deepening the shadow becomes the goal, neither the acting nor the spatial layout survives, so carry the city's unease and the character's psychology through composition, light and narration. | Tilting the set alone does not produce interiority, the distortion becomes background decoration, and the frame stops having anything to do with the character. |
