Braille comes from Symbol Systems and Pictogram System from Information Design. Both are read here as style. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.

Braille

A tactile writing system Louis Braille designed at fifteen, giving every letter a two-by-three cell of dots. Sizing that cell to a single fingertip is a rare case of ergonomics and typography arriving at the same answer.

Pictogram System

Unified symbol systems that name facilities and actions without language. Tokyo 1964 systematized sport and wayfinding symbols; the AIGA/DOT transportation set became the public-domain world standard.
