Biomorphism vs Nouveau Organic
バイオモーフィズム/有機的形態 / ヌーヴォー・オーガニック
Biomorphism comes from Modern Architecture and Nouveau Organic from Furniture and Interiors. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.
Biomorphism
Extends asymmetric, continuous forms suggesting cells, bones, organs and plants into abstraction, furniture, vessels and space.
Nouveau Organic

A late-1980s and 1990s revival of Art Nouveau, Catalan Modernisme, and organic architecture in restaurants, furniture, and lighting. Plant lines become bone-, shell-, cave-, and sea-creature-like structure rather than applied surface decoration.
| Biomorphism | Nouveau Organic | |
|---|---|---|
| Era | 1930s–1960s / ongoing | late 1980s–mid-1990s |
| Family | Modern Architecture | Furniture and Interiors |
| Kind | Style | Style |
| Cues | Asymmetric curves / Cell-like forms / Smooth continuous surfaces / Abstraction from nature | Continuous surfaces suggesting bone, shell, leaf, or cave / Columns, furniture, and lights sharing one organic contour / Opal glass, forged metal, mosaic, and molded resin / Blue-green, amber, ivory, and deep violet jewel tones |
| Best used for | Furniture and vessels shaped by curves that follow the hand and body · Placing one softening element inside a hard rectilinear space | Making hospitality or stage space feel like entering one organism · Designing furniture, lighting, and walls as parts of the same organic structure |
| Type | Choose letterforms without corners and set them along the contour | Do not bend every letter along the curves; anchor one quiet serif sign at the entrance or menu. |
| Composition | Avoid symmetry and close the outline as one continuous line | Join floor, wall, and ceiling by curves and treat furniture as nodes on the same contour. |
| Material | Moulded plywood or resin, plaster, polished wood, joints blended into curves | Connect forged metal, opal glass, mosaic, and molded resin with matching seam curvature. |
| Caution | Adding curves without measuring against the body leaves nothing the hand can confirm, and the object is merely round. | Vine wallpaper alone is Art Nouveau-flavored decoration. Derive load, seating, light, and circulation from the organic form. |
