Biker Style vs Punk
バイカー・スタイル / パンク
Biker Style comes from Subculture Style and Punk from Counterculture. They are reached for with some of the same intent, which is where they get confused.
Biker Style

A protective riding jacket became a language of rebellion and belonging through motorcycle clubs, film, rock and punk; asymmetrical zip, wide lapels, belt, hardware and worn black leather retain both function and symbol.
Punk
A DIY objection to the authority of the tidy, made by cutting, pasting and dirtying.

|---|---|---|
| Era | 1920s– | 1970s–1980s |
| Family | Subculture Style | Counterculture |
| Kind | Style | Style |
| Cues | Asymmetric zipper crossing the front / Hard outline from wide lapels, epaulettes and waist belt / Heavy black leather and silver hardware / Back patches, studs, wear and personal marks | Cut-and-paste letters / Photocopier noise / Handwriting / Ragged placement |
| Best used for | Designing leather outerwear for riding protection and mobility · Showing speed, rebellion and group identity through one garment in music, film and fashion | Voicing dissent against the rules · Giving events and communities a raw voice |
| Type | Align condensed sans or patch lettering with the hardware direction. | Mix newsprint letters, handwriting and stamps |
| Composition | Use the diagonal front zip as the main axis and build a triangle through collar, shoulder and belt. | Deliberate misalignment and overlap; disturb even the margins |
| Material | Start with heavy black leather, silver zips, snaps and buckles, retaining creases and abrasion from use. | Copier paper, tears, black plus a warning color |
| Caution | More black leather and studs do not make the style. Separate riding function from cultural personalization. | Borrowed rebellion is hollow. Decide what you are protesting first. |
